Goukou Meander
The charm and appeal to visitors that Stilbaai enjoys would have been significantly diminished if there was no Goukou River mouth. Part of a marine reserve, this estuarine river divides Stilbaai into east and west. Apart from its tranquil beauty, it is home to a variety of fish species, estuarine organisms and plants and abundant birdlife.

The 64 km long river from source to sea is navigable for some 15 km upstream, though the estuary, embedded in a deep valley, stretches as far as 19 km upstream. Along the western side of the winding river, runs a meandering road providing access to several farms.

The need was identified to develop the Goukou Meander to become a First Class Tourism destination, tapping into the talents, abilities and cooperation of its inhabitants.
Much has been done since to promote the riches this area has to offer for all to explore and enjoy. Visitors are invited to follow this winding road and discover the unspoiled natural beauty and open-hearted hospitality. There’s an inherent quality in people who find themselves consistently immersed in the tranquil rhythm of nature. Those who can tune in to the distinct symphony of nocturnal creatures as they emerge to forage, all while admiring the brilliance of the stars in the night sky.
Development of Self-catering Guest Farms
Many cottages, houses and other types of lodging of various size and forms are in existence in the Goukou Meander. Of late many farm owners have converted their properties to self-catering guest farms, offering mostly upmarket accommodation to visitors away from the hustle and bustle. Visitors can enjoy birding, swimming, water-skiing, canoeing, fishing and more (of course within the rules of the Marine Protected Area which includes the river).
Some farms are still working farms, but unused buildings on the property have been converted or renovated to comfortable self-catering accommodation. On some of these farms visitors can observe, and also experience farm activities first hand – imagine the astonishment of a kid when realising where eggs actually come from… priceless!

A number of these farms are active olive farms producing award-winning olive products, while also offering spectacular venues for weddings and other events, along with outstanding accommodation. Visitors can attend olive product tastings and buy olive products directly from the source.
